10 years after the Quart Project

We dedicate this article to a historic revamping project of the Quart Hydroelectric Power Plant, which still celebrates the reliability and versatility of T.M. products, and the ability of our technical staff to interface with leading companies in electricity distribution and renewable energy such as CVA.

The Quart hydroelectric power plant

In the heart of the Aosta Valley, immersed in the suggestive Alpine setting, stands the Quart hydroelectric power plant. Built in 1958, it has played a fundamental role in the regional energy landscape for over half a century. In 2014, CVA, the company that manages the plant, decided to undertake a major modernization project, with the aim of optimizing the performance and efficiency of the plant.

The Revamping of 2014

The modernization project, conducted by a team of expert companies, including T.M., involved several areas of the plant:

Replacement of hydroelectric groups: The two original Pelton groups dating back to the 1960s have been replaced with two modern, high-efficiency Francis turbines, capable of making the most of the available water flow and significantly increasing energy production.
Renovation of the engine room: The engine room has been completely renovated, with the installation of new control and automation systems, electrical panels and transformer cabins.
Improved hydraulic efficiency: Optimization of the diversion channel and penstock was carried out in order to reduce pressure losses and improve overall hydraulic efficiency.
Improved safety: Various measures were implemented to improve the safety of the plant, including the installation of new monitoring systems and overpressure protection devices.

Characteristics Before revamping After revamping
Installed power 24 MW 38,5 MW
Annual production 130 GWh 180 GWh
Hydraulic efficiency 85% 92%
Water consumption 100 m³/s 85 m³/s
CO2 emissions 40.000 t/year 28.000 t/year

Following the revamping, the Quart hydroelectric plant has undergone a radical transformation, today, the plant is able to produce 30% more electricity than in the past, with a significant saving of water and a reduction in CO2 emissions. The plant is also safer and more efficient, ensuring greater reliability and a lower environmental impact.

The contribution of T.M.

T.M.’s intervention in support of the 2014 revamping is the result of a synergy between the companies that operated in the Quart plant and between the technical and engineering staff of T.M. who studied tailor-made solutions to optimize their products so that they can stand the test of time. A major technical challenge both in terms of the design of the TMclad primary distribution panels and the design and construction of a unique TMkiosk, arranged on two floors to both house TMclad and ensure the connection of the main busbars to the engine room tunnel.

  • TMkiosk two-story, custom built
  • TMclad from 17.5kV 3150A 50kA
(for the external area, contained in the TMkiosk)
  • 2x TMclad from 17,5kV 1600A 50kA
(for the power plant engine room gallery)
  • Support frames for the electrical panels supplied
  • Supply and installation of meters
  • Transport, assembly, on-site testing and assistance with blank tests, activation and commissioning of the stations
  • Technical documentation

For over a decade TMclad
is at the center of the distribution
of the Quart hydroelectric power plant

TMclad it is a now historic framework for T.M., whose first development dates back to 2013, since 2014 some of the first examples demonstrate their reliability on a daily basis.

T.M.’s 2014 intervention at the Quart hydroelectric plant represents a virtuous example of how technological innovation and commitment to sustainability can contribute to modernizing the energy system and reducing environmental impact. Our company is proud to have taken part in this successful project, which has allowed us to give new life to a historic plant and contribute to the energy future of the Aosta Valley.

The new TMclad

Ten years later, TMclad continues to be one of our best products, and over time new solutions have been implemented and technical innovation has accompanied its development until converging in the new TMclad which will soon enter into operation in 5 strategic sites in southern Italy.
